info About this place

Guangzhou Opera House was designed by Zaha Hadid, the world-renowned architect, and carries the name “Double Pebble”. The foundation stone of the project was laid in early 2005. Construction of the grand performance hall, made of concrete, granite, and glass-clad steel, took five years.

On 9 May 2010 the opera house saw its premiere by the American filmmaker Shahar Stroh, who directed the opera house’s first production: Puccini’s opera Turandot, which in previous years had been a subject of controversy in China. Together with the National Theater in Beijing and the Shanghai Theater, this opera house is considered one of the three largest theaters in China.
