info About this place

Shamian Island is probably the place in China richest in European customs. It fully preserves the European customs dating back to the 19th century under the Anglo-French concession, and it is a well-known tourist area for foreign affairs and a protected area of historic relics in Guangzhou.

What makes the island stand out:

  • European architecture: The island features historic 19th-century European-style buildings, including churches, former consulates, and commercial buildings, many of which have now been converted into cafés, restaurants, and shops.
  • Calm atmosphere: Its pedestrian-only streets, green gardens, and bronze statues scattered everywhere make it an ideal place for walking and photography.
  • Historic landmarks: You can visit the Catholic church of “Our Lady of Lourdes” in French Gothic style and an Anglican Protestant church, as well as old consulate buildings such as the former consulate of the Soviet Union.
  • Cafés and restaurants: The island has many elegant cafés and restaurants offering varied dining experiences, which makes it a great place to spend an afternoon.
